How Streets Get their Names
| Articles - Town N Country News |
Normal procedures for renaming an existing Hillsborough County roadway are as follows:
- Formal written request submitted to 9-1-1 Administration, Streets and Addresses (preferably by one of the property owners abutting the street to be renamed).
- 9-1-1 Administration, Streets and Addresses:
- Assigns a control number
- Researches and develops a property ownership/tenant listing for properties on both sides of the street
- Provides requestor
- a standard notification letter with petition (showing affected owners of record)
- instructions for obtaining concurrence signatures from affected property owners
- proposed suspense date for return of signed petitions
- 3. Requestor is responsible for contacting all affected property owners/tenants, obtaining signatures, and developing a prioritized list of proposed replacement street names.
- When completed (signed) petition forms are returned to 9-1-1 Administration, Streets and Addresses
- a review of the proposed street names is conducted to insure a duplication of names is not present in the 9-1-1 database and that the proposed name is not considered offensive.
- If a single name is found acceptable to all affected owners, and it passes the internal review process, a formal notification letter is prepared and forwarded to all affected owners indicating what their proposed new address will be and providing the scheduled date for review by the BOCC.
- a formal Agenda Item is prepared for BOCC consideration with staff recommendations.
- If BOCC approves the name change, 9-1-1 Administration, Streets and Addresses
- establishes an effective date for the change-over
- provides official address change notices for all affected owners/tenants
- completes a sign work order for each street sign that will need to be changed
- completes telephone updates to the 9-1-1 database
PLEASE NOTE: Renaming of an existing roadway is normally considered only when the existing name is duplicated in the 9-1-1 database or when renaming will eliminate confusion. In addition, all affected property owners/tenants must concur with the name change.
Please feel free to contact the 9-1-1 Administration, Streets and Addresses Unit at 744-5911 or 744-5862 if you have additional questions or require some clarification.
